Superb Pair of Sheraton Period Fire Screens

No. R16278

Superb matched pair of Sheraton period fire screens made in satinwood with Kingwood inlaid cross banding.

These fire screens have the most wonderful form - the tripod base is so delicate and stylish with Kingwood cross banding on the face of the legs, on the top of the incurved triangular brace and top and sides of the disc beneath the urn (which retains the original painted leaf decoration).

The original screens are silk with silk stitching around the periphery of vines, leaves and flowers held together with blue ribbons.  In the center ovals are a boy and girl surrounded by a design of silver sequins (now black with tarnish).
The diamond shaped darker center is the result of the wood frame (the silk is attached to) blocking the presence of oxygen from darken the silk (which it has in the center) which proves the stitchery is original to the frames.

They also retain their original urn finials.

Amazing survivors!

In 46 years of buying fire screens I’ve only had two pair (these are #2).

Circa:  1790
