Large Wrought Iron Lark Spit

No. R17052

Wonderful wrought iron lark spit - unusually large.

(for roasting small birds either caught or from a dove cote)

Great form and condition.

In England at a larger, fairly wealthy households (up to palaces) there would probably be a “dovecote”.

A separate (or attached) small building with hundreds of bird holes in the exterior with a separate bird house for each pair of birds inside.

During the night the eggs and birds would be harvested when needed as a free source of protein.  They also used the dung for fertilizer.
