Important Boston Seymour Sofa

No. DH15668

This important American sofa is identical, from the arms down, to the sofa pictured in Robert Mussey’s book on Seymour furniture (catalogue entry 140), which retains the earlier style plain arched crest and arms with less detail.  From the arms up, this sofa completes the newer Regency design which the base implies.

The noted Seymour features are:  lunette inlay on the crest and seat rails, half-over-the-rail upholstery, tapered ebony inlay and specific construction detail.

The arms are quite fantastic, having carved scrolls formed and highlighted to dramatic effect by the curved triangular ebony inlay on their inner and outer sides.

The “winged” tablet crest is highly successful, with carved and ebony inlaid whorls framing the center mahogany tablet.

The carved whorls on the arms and back, coupled with the use of curved triangular ebony inlay, brings this sofa up to Masterpiece level.

It is a rare and stunning piece from Boston.

Circa:  1812 to 1814.
