Flemish Bronze Lavabo

No. R16930

Superb and very rare fifteenth century Flemish bronze lavabo.

Two spouts with animalistic (dragon) heads hung from a cast and filed bronze swivel hanger (the sockets that the hanger enters is usually a crude face) which allowed the vessel to be tipped either way to pour water which was used for pre dinner ritual hand washing.

Note the casting slips that were part of the 16thc. bronze casting technology - they kept the inner and outer molds separated so the walls of the vessel remained a consistent thickness. (note one is more visible near the dent).

Repair to the top of the handle where the swivel goes through (it’s all there with a brass plate added to strengthen it) and dent in the side.

9 1/2 “ with handle raised Bowl is 6” diameter and the spouts are 11” wide
